Purple Haze

The Lavender Festival on Sunday was GREAT. We met my coworker Nicole in the morning and drove to Port Townsend, dropped off John's car and then drove to Sequim. We started off at the street market/fair thing and got some lunch as we listened to some pavilion music. There was a pretty big food selection and we decided on getting BBQ. After lunch, we walked back and forth through the street fair for quite awhile, taking pictures, enjoying the smells and sights and occasionally music. I found a booth with a little old Chinese lady who sold Chinese Calligraphy paintings. We got to talking and I got to used my Mandarin (finally) and she was tickled pink by the fact I could speak! It was great. We ran across a lady playing a didgeridoo which I've never heard in person before. She was amazing. I can't even describe how great it was. I've never heard anything that sounded so...spiritual? I can't even describe it. To visit her site, click here. She would have been an amazing beat boxer. For anyone who doesn't know what a didgeridoo is, it's that Australian instrument that makes the "wow" sound. You'll know it when you hear it. Look it up on Youtube. I'll try to upload a video I took of her.
After we watched her for awhile, I got some Lavender lotion and then we went to the waiting area for buses going to different Lavender fields. John picked the biggest farm which was named Purple Haze. When we got there, all three of us got off the bus and we instantly felt like we were in Tuscany or something...there were rolling rows of lavender leading down a hillside to a stage where some AMAZING music was coming from. It sounded like an electric violin. We took some pictures and then made our way down to the stage, got ourselves some Lavender Margaritas and sat and listened to Geoffrey Castle. Check his site out HERE. He had a great combination of styles. He did everything from Celtic music to "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix in honor of the Lavender farm we were at. It was just him performing. He would play a loop and record it and then play another loop and record that loop and then play the two together and play a solo on top of it. It was amazing. We listened to him for about 15 to 20 minutes and then we walked around and checked out a few gift tents they had up. They let you cut your own bouquet of Lavender so John and I did that while Nicole relaxed on a lawn chair in the middle of bushels of Lavender. We got a nice sized bouquet of 3 or 4 different kinds of Lavender and then we enjoyed some Lavender ice cream. We had originally planned on visiting several farms but after visiting Purple Haze, we were perfectly content to just call it a day. On our way home, we stopped at this train restaurant near Quilcene that I LOVE. It's literally a train that they turned into a little cafe on the side of the road. Which I think is great. After eating a delicious pizza, we dropped John off at his car and drove home. And it was a great end to a great weekend...and yes, all the pictures in this blog were taken by ME! Check out the rest here.
