Carb Junkie

My cat is a carb junkie. As well as small, chewable objects: rubberbands, paperclips, hairclips, bobbypins, small unidentifiable sharp pieces of plastic...that sort of thing.
When he was a wee kitten, he ate said piece of sharp plastic and had to have stomach surgery. We've been constantly reminding him ever since that that surgery will NOT be repeated if he eats something again. He'll just have to poop it or puke it. To this day, we don't really know what the piece of plastic was from or how he got a hold of it.
But back to carbs. George loves carbs. LOVES them. For example, yesterday I made a double batch of banana bread muffin things. I put them into large ziplock bags and had them on the counter, ready for frosting. They were there most of the day, untouched. After going out in the evening for less than an hour (mind you, I was gone MOST of the day which gave him plenty of opportunity but OH NO!), we came home to find one bag chewed through and over 6 muffins munched on. SERIOUSLY?? Then this morning I noticed our bread was all teeth-marky too. This cat...no wonder he isn't losing any weight. I have him on a diet but what good does that do if he's constantly binging on carbs? I cannot count how many times he's eaten my or John's cereal if we step away from the table for 0.04 seconds. Whenever something drops in the kitchen, he is there. In fact, he has become our regular garbage disposal for kitchen drippings. Spill some drops of batter? Call George. He'll have it clean in a jiffy. It's safe to bet that as long as whatever falls on the floor isn't fruit, George will eat it. This does apply to plastic and vitamins so we try to be quick when those fall. Bean will come along when George grabs things from the floor but she doesn't really understand why she's there once she gets there. She knows she's missing something exciting...but isn't quite sure what. Bean is a little bit more sensible about what she puts in her mouth. To some extent. She eats fur, hair, and string (she's not the sharpest...every time we brush either of them, she eyes the brush and loose fur like it's a tasty snack...??). But that's where she draws the line. No plastic. No carbs other than a crumb here or there...not ENTIRE mouth-fulls like George. She isn't the brightest crayon in the box. But at least she has some sense...some of the time. The only other weird thing she'll eat is watermelon. LOVES it.
This last photo is titled "In our absence, she grew quite close with the kitchen sponge." After returning from a short trip, I came home to discover her cuddling and snuggling the kitchen sponge...which she had obviously snagged from the kitchen sink. Oh Beanie...
My kitties are weirdos but I love them. And they're my babies. I'm interested to see how they react to when I have a REAL baby.
